ITAKO - SHI

Sometimes known as Suigo, literally meaing 'canal district', Itako City first prospered as a hub for both water and land transport. Itako is also famous for its iris festival which takes place between late May and late June each year - the city is so famous for iris flowers it is sometimes referred to as 'the home of the iris'.

水郷潮来あやめ園

約500種、100万株もの白、紫、黄の色とりどりのあやめが美しく咲き誇るあやめ園。5月下旬～6月下旬に催される「水郷潮来あやめまつり」の期間中は、水郷ならではの様々なイベントも同時開催。白無垢姿の花嫁さんが、手漕ぎのろ舟に乗って花婿の元へ向かう「嫁入り舟」や幻想的な風景を見せてくれるライトアップ、船頭さんの昔話を聞きながら情緒たっぷりに進んでいく「ろ船遊覧」など、心に残る風景や見どころが満載。一番の見頃は6月10日頃。
